Mandarin

Spoken Chinese 1 (Beginner) is a language and culture course which aims to help you increase your confidence and ability to communicate in spoken Mandarin and to communicate with people from other cultures.
There are 10 units in the course, providing 10 hours of learning in total. Each unit has an Intercultural Skills section and a Language Skills section.
The activities in the Language Skills section are suitable for learners who are at Foundation or Beginner level (A1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference). Although some former exposure to Chinese would be an advantage, it is not necessary.
The interactive activities focus on listening and speaking skills and will help you learn to:
•    pronounce the sounds and tones of Mandarin
•    greet people and say goodbye
•    use phrases for coping with miscommunication
•    ask for things in shops
•    understand numbers 1-99
•    understand and respond when your hosts offer you food
•    make and respond to compliments
•    offer to help someone
•    use simple phrases for making plans
•    ask and answer simple questions about yourself and your family
The course will give you a head start in understanding Chinese culture and a toolbox of survival language to get by when you arrive. f you are preparing to teach in China, you may also be interested in enrolling in TESOL Online  – a 50-hour course for new and practicing ESOL teachers.
